Abstract
The main objective of this dissertation is to carry out a non-speculative "reconstitution" exercise of the follow-up to the View of Lisbon from the Academia Nacional de Belas Artes. This water-coloured drawing by an unknown author represents, very accurately, the riverfront façade of the city of Lisbon between the Alcântara valley and Alto de Santa Catarina, between 1768 and 1769. Physically, it is composed by six glued sheets that total 3.615 meters in length. However, by the way it is drawn, it is believed that there was an intention to continue it, although such continuation has not been found nor is there any evidence that exists. Although little known, this drawing has been surfacing in recent years, mostly as an iconographic support in certain researches and the subject of some reflections and studies by historians and architects. This dissertation has four objectives. It aims to analyse the studies that have been dedicated to the View and its method of execution, to accurately identify the point from where it was drawn and, from there, not only to broaden the knowledge about it by adding information to the existing legends, but also to carry out an exercise of "reconstitution" of its missing "follow-up". Finally, a reflection is made about the work done, the objectives accomplished, the impact it will have on future research on the same view or similar cases and the relevance of the discipline of architecture in the study of iconographic works of this type.
