Vilas operárias em Lisboa: emergência de novos modos de habitar: o caso da Vila Berta

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of using buildings wich belong in the housing workers typology as multi-family housing, from the end of the XIX century to the beginning of the XX century in Lisbon – known as workforce housing. It is understood be crucial to highlight its importance as an historical and urban witness of the city growth, while landmark of specific social experiences. Specifically, the aim is to identify the actual state of the habitat, describe it under the terms of its functional changes, and conclude on the conditions of living that may or may not offer the contemporary family. The study case chosen for this purpose - the Vila Berta, located in Graça, Lisbon - includes the analysis of six separate housings. The research strategy adopted includes the characterization of habitat and identification of space and constructive changes made on housing. Through the understanding of spatial organization of housings and its relationship with the associated domestic activities, in the original project and the current situation, it is then possible to conclude on the evolution of ways of living and on how they fit the pre-existing structures. On the other hand, is determined how these structures suited to demands of contemporary living. To this end, it is understood to be essential to quantify the satisfaction of the users in relation to his residence and the surrounding next. It appears that most of the interventions focuses on the expansion of space, whose dimensions are considered insufficient given the space requirements of comfort, reorganization and redistribution of household activities within the original housing, and in some cases, on the need to increase the usable area and the number of rooms available in order to meet the most demanding programmatic types. O objectivo deste trabalho consiste em demonstrar a viabilidade de utilização de edifícios de habitação pluri-familiar que se inserem numa das tipologias de alojamento operário dos finais do séc.XIX e inícios do séc.XX em Lisboa - a vila operária. Entende-se ser fundamental colocar em evidência a sua importância enquanto testemunho histórico e urbanístico do crescimento da cidade e enquanto marco de vivências sociais específicas. Pretende-se identificar a situação actual do espaço habitacional, caracterizá-lo sob o ponto de vista da sua evolução funcional, e concluir sobre as condições de habitabilidade que pode ou não oferecer às famílias contemporâneas. O estudo de caso escolhido para este efeito – a Vila Berta, localizada na freguesia da Graça – contempla a análise de seis fogos distintos. A estratégia de investigação adoptada inclui a caracterização do espaço habitacional e a identificação das alterações espaciais e construtivas introduzidas nas habitações. Através da compreensão da organização espacial dos fogos e da sua relação com as actividades domésticas associadas, no projecto original e na situação actual, é então possível concluir sobre a evolução dos modos de habitar e sobre a forma como estes se adaptam a estruturas pré-existentes. Por outro lado, identifica-se a forma como estas estruturas se adequam à solicitações do habitar contemporâneo. Para esse efeito, considera-se a aferição do grau de satisfação dos próprios utilizadores, em relação à sua residência e à envolvente próxima. Conclui-se que a generalidade das intervenções incide sobre a ampliação de espaços cujas dimensões se consideram insuficientes face às actuais exigências espaciais da habitação, a reorganização e redistribuição das actividades domésticas dentro do fogo original, e nalguns casos, sobre a necessidade de incremento da área útil e do número de divisões disponíveis, de modo a responder a um programa habitacional mais exigente.
