O Matadouro como nova centralidade

The project starts from a desire to design an equipment that can enhance its surroundings and the nature around it, by also stitching the urban fabric and creating binding links on the site. These premises arise from an analysis of the territory in question. The Ribeira de João Gomes, located in Funchal, on the island of Madeira, is characterized by its formation through vertiginous and impressive cliffs, covered by a green mantle of superb vegetation. But there is something dissonant in this place: the implantation of the construction in the territory. It does not relate to the nature and does not respect it. On the other hand, nature responds to the pressure of construction by deteriorating it through natural disasters. These two components of the city end up generating a conflicting dialogue that damages the island's life. Thus, occurs the need to create a proposal that can bring harmony between these forces of the territory. One example of the situation described previously is the renovation that was carried out in the Funchal Slaughterhouse, an emblematic structure of Funchal. The renovation work destroys part of the Slaughterhouse, not valuing it, and not dialoguing with the site. Due to these conditions, this project will propose an alternative solution to the reactivation of the Slaughterhouse that can highlight it, integrate it in its surroundings and connect the two margins of the riverside. This new solution will have the program of a cultural center, a program that enables the dynamization of the site.
