Abstract

Agrivoltaic (AgriPV) systems, which integrate agriculture and photovoltaic (PV) technologies, offer a promising solution to the growing global demands for sustainable energy and food production. This dissertation focuses on the implementation of AgriPV systems in greenhouses, combining renewable energy generation with controlled agricultural environments. By examining three case studies in Por- tugal,Silves, Lagos, and Odemira, the research analyzes site-specific characteristics, solar irradiance trends, and the performance of various PV technologies, including thin-film, organic photovoltaic (OPV), and monocrystalline modules. The study employs theoretical modeling and simulation techniques to evaluate energy generation and environmental interactions while assessing economic feasibility through financial metrics such as Net Present Value (NPV), Payback Period (PP), and Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE). The findings highlight the significant potential of AgriPV systems to optimize land use, reduce water stress, and en- hance renewable energy production. However, challenges such as high initial investment costs, crop compatibility, and structural adaptations are identified, with recommendations for policy and technologi- cal advancements to facilitate broader adoption. By positioning greenhouse-integrated AgriPV systems as a vital solution to the food-energy nexus, this dissertation aligns with global sustainability goals and provides a roadmap for future research and practical implementation, demonstrating their capacity to address critical environmental and socioeco- nomic challenges.
