Abstract
This dissertation aims to discuss public space based on the interpretation of the relationship between the city and education outlined by Trilla (1993): the city as an educational context, as an educational agente and as a content for education. Public space serve as dynamic platforms for learning and growth. Consequently, architects have the responsibility to reflect on the messages they intend to impart through their designs. Furthermore, the Educating Cities Movement, summarized in Charter of Educating Cities, reflects the collective commitment of member Cities towards fostering educational environments within public spaces. It exposes the premises that these cities must adress, with a focus on fostering opportunities and equipping citizens with the requisite tools for lifelong learning and development. The aim of this investigation is to survey the explore the diverse roles of public spaces as vehicles for educational activities, whether formal, non-formal or informal modes of education. The focus of the investigation is on the Alvalade neighbourhood in Lisbon and the Coruchéus Municipal Complex, within this neighbourhood is presented as a case study, offering insights into the practical application of these educational principles within a specific urban context. The analysis methodology is based on the Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) methods, which emphasize the users’ perspectives and observations regarding the utilization of the analysed space. This approach demonstrates both the strenghts and weaknesses of the constructed space through on-site observations, informal interviews, and the creation of behavioral maps, offering a comprehensive understanding of its functionality and user experience.
