Abstract

Continuing a tradition established in 2003, the XXII International Conference on Building Pathology and Construction Repair (CINPAR 2026) brought the international community together at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Portugal, from 15 to 17 July 2026. This volume contains the scientific and technical contributions presented at the conference. Over its first 21 editions, CINPAR grew into an international meeting place for researchers, engineers, architects, construction professionals, public authorities, and students. Its in-person and virtual editions have been hosted in Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Chile, Italy, and Türkiye. This history bears witness to the strength of the CINPAR community and to the lasting importance of the questions that led to the conference’s creation more than two decades ago. Those questions are, if anything, more urgent today. Urbanisation and population growth continue to increase the demand for buildings and infrastructure. At the same time, much of the existing built environment is ageing and needs to be assessed, maintained, adapted, and strengthened. Natural and human-induced hazards place further pressure on structures and communities, often revealing vulnerabilities that have developed over many years. There are also compelling environmental, economic, and cultural reasons to make better use of what has already been built. Extending the service life of existing assets can reduce the consumption of materials and other resources, while the conservation of historic buildings protects values that cannot be replaced. In many cases, demolition and reconstruction are neither economically realistic nor environmentally or culturally acceptable. The future of the construction sector will therefore depend as much on how we care for existing buildings and infrastructure as on what we build anew. Successful intervention requires a sound understanding of materials, structural systems, deterioration processes, and the methods available for inspection, testing, and assessment. It also requires repair and strengthening solutions that are effective, durable, and compatible with the original construction. Technical knowledge alone is not enough: appropriate standards, responsible management, and close cooperation between research and practice are equally important. It was within this context that CINPAR 2026 received 212 abstracts, resulting in the acceptance of 154 full papers. The scientific programme comprised 42 sessions: 32 general sessions, three technical sessions, four keynote sessions, and three thematic sessions. These figures are a clear indication of the scale of the conference and of the range of work currently being undertaken in building pathology, rehabilitation, and construction repair. The papers in these proceedings are organised under eight themes: Inspection and Defects; Materials and Techniques; Natural Hazards; Infrastructure; Design Projects and Rehabilitation Works; Built Heritage; Management and Standards; and Research and Recent Developments. The contributions cover a wide field. They examine diagnostic and non-destructive testing methods, the behaviour and characterisation of construction materials, structural assessment, hazard mitigation, and the conservation of historic buildings. They also present new repair technologies, case studies of rehabilitation projects, and research on the management and long-term performance of the built environment. The keynote lectures and thematic sessions gave particular attention to questions that are likely to shape the field in the coming years. These included automated and large-scale non-destructive testing, integrated methods for assessing existing and historic structures, the seismic behaviour and strengthening of traditional construction, and the use of digital technologies in the diagnosis of building pathology. The discussions showed the value of bringing scientific research, professional experience, and technological development into closer contact. They also reminded us that interventions must respond not only to questions of safety and durability, but also to the character and cultural significance of the buildings concerned. These proceedings are the result of the work of a broad international community. We hope they will be useful to researchers, practitioners, students, asset owners, public authorities, and others responsible for the care of buildings, infrastructure, and built heritage. Beyond recording the work presented in Lisbon, we hope the volume will encourage further discussion, research, and cooperation. We sincerely thank the authors for choosing CINPAR 2026 as the forum in which to present their work. We are also grateful to the members of the Scientific Committee for the time, care, and expertise they devoted to evaluating the submitted contributions. Our thanks extend to the keynote speakers, thematic-session organisers, session chairs, and participants, whose involvement gave substance and energy to the scientific programme. The conference would not have been possible without the commitment of the International Organising Committee, the Local Organising Committee, and the Honorary Committee, together with the work of many colleagues and volunteers. We are deeply grateful to our sponsors—hci, Instituto Nova Engenharia, Kerakoll, JETSJ, Imperalum, OZ, and STAP—whose generous support played an essential part in making CINPAR 2026 possible. We also thank our institutional supporters for their valued cooperation, and our media partners for helping to extend the reach of the conference. We hope that the discussions begun at CINPAR 2026 will continue long after the conference itself. May these proceedings support new research, encourage lasting cooperation, and help advance the thoughtful and responsible care of our built environment. Tiago Miguel Ferreira Chair of CINPAR 2026 On behalf of the Organising Committee
