Abstract
Climate change affects the water cycle mainly by influencing precipitation and potential evapotranspiration. Further, the expansion of major cities like Berlin causes the natural land cover to be replaced by impermeable surfaces. This leads to higher surface runoff and lower infiltration which can also affect the river discharge as well as groundwater recharge. This thesis investigates the effects of both climate change and surface sealing on the groundwater recharge of the Panke catchment as well as their impacts on the river discharge of the river Panke in Berlin/Brandenburg. Using the rainfall-runoff model STORM.XXL, the simulation results from several climate and urbanization scenarios are compared with a reference scenario representing the current state of the Panke catchment. The analysis of climate projections indicates an increase in frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation events with climate change. Consecutively, the simulations show more frequent and higher peak discharges in the Panke river during extreme events which can be intensified significantly by the impermeabilization of the upstream part of the catchment. Furthermore, with hardly any trend in the projected annual precipitation, no major impact on the recharge rate of the Panke Valley aquifer is found in the long-term. However, the negative impact from impermeabilization can significantly decrease the recharge rates of the groundwater with progressing urbanization. Therefore, it is advisable to rely on decentralized infiltration to ensure a sustainable groundwater recharge of the Panke Valley aquifer, when increasing the residential area in the Panke catchment.
