Resumo

The purpose of this work is to assess solutions for the Alverca manufacturing unit of ADP Fertilizantes to improve its management of nitrogen in wastewater streams both by effective treatment and recovery processes. A sampling campaign was carried out to characterize its current effluent system. Three main nitrogen removal technologies, biological nitrogen removal, reverse electrodialysis, and reverse osmosis, were assessed using a pre-dimensioning methodology and a comprehensive analysis of economic and environmental impacts. Reverse osmosis presents the lower environmental impact and the greater economic viability. Recommendations for improving the current effluent management system include installing more flow meters and strengthening the internal laboratory analysis routine. Finally, the recovery of ammonium into a commercial ammonium sulfate solution through air stripping suggests a profitable avenue.
