Resumo

Warehouses play a crucial role in supply chains. Its management must be rigorous to reach the increasingly demanding levels of customers. When this is the case, warehouses can provide lower transportation costs, reduce delivery times, and minimize the effects of demand uncertainty, Torrestir Logística is a logistics and storage services provider which owns a 25.000 m2 warehouse in Azambuja. This warehouse is multiclient, and it provides services to more than 25 clients. The company's managers have realized that high operating costs have become a problem. To overcome these high costs, they consider that there are two critical factors: inventory control; and the layout of the products in the storage areas. With the aim of solving the problem presented by the company, this dissertation addresses, in a literature review, several concepts and methodologies of inventory control and products location in warehouses. Afterwards, a client is chosen and methodologies, which have proved to be better adapted to the reality under study, are implemented. For the inventory control a cycle counting methodology was implemented which allowed to calculate an 88% inventory record accuracy result and the possible causes for this low value were studied. Regarding the location of products, the family grouping strategy and the ABC and demand correlation analyses were implemented. After the layout changes it was possible to obtain a 33% reduction in time per unit in the picking operation. This reduction can generate an annual saving of around 4.200 euros in the customer's operations alone.
