Abstract

The increasing interest in cutting-edge high-speed air vehicles, such as supersonic aircraft, underscores the critical need for innovative structural design solutions to enhance the resilience and efficiency of lightweight aerospace structures under extreme environments, including aeroelastic flutter stability. This work is focused on the development and assessment of a refined finite element framework, aimed at aeroelastic flutter analysis and active control of advanced multilayered composite panels under supersonic airflow, exploring the capabilities of variable stiffness composite (VSC) laminates with curvilinear fibres, viscoelastic materials, and smart piezoelectric sensors/actuators as emerging and highly promising structural design technologies for multifunctional aerospace structures. Considering purely elastic composite laminates, viscoelastic sandwich panels, and smart panels with surface bonded piezoelectric layers/patches, all featuring composite layers with either unidirectional or curvilinear fibres, the associated modelling challenges posed by material inhomogeneities, transverse shear deformations, thickness stretching and coupled electromechanical response are discussed using progressively refined high-order structural theories, including Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) and quasi-3D Layerwise (LW) models, while assuming the quasi-steady first-order piston theory as aerodynamic model. In view of the structural modelling, the comprehensive assessment of the models predictive capabilities reveals that although first-order shear deformation models provide a fair compromise between numerical accuracy and computational efficiency, high-order structural models with thickness stretching are crucial to obtain highly accurate flutter estimations, especially when dealing with VSC layers featuring curvilinear fibres, moderately thick panels, flutter involving high-order modes and high-temperature environments. From a design perspective, curvilinear fibres tailoring and viscoelastic damping treatments offer great potential to enhance supersonic panel flutter stability, enabling higher critical flutter Mach numbers. Additionally, active control in smart panels significantly improves flutter resistance, with proportional feedback control excelling in coupled-mode flutter and derivative feedback control in single-mode flutter.
