Abstract

The national road network in Portugal is practically complete, but it is subject to stresses which, over time, reduce its structural and functional quality. In this context, the study of alternative pavement construction and rehabilitation solutions that offer greater economic viability and environmental sustainability is playing an increasingly important role, even worldwide. The aim of this dissertation is to carry out a comparative analysis of the performance of different more sustainable solutions that can be used in the construction of flexible pavements that make up the road network. The analysis is carried out for the structural rehabilitation of the IP8 pavement between Santa Margarida do Sado and Ferreira do Alentejo. It describes the solution designed by IP - Infraestruturas de Portugal, S.A., and patented in a public tender launched in 2023, and the solutions compared are intended to serve as alternatives. To contextualize this analysis, a literature review is presented on the design of flexible road pavements, covering topics such as degradation mechanisms, types of pathologies, evaluation of the load capacity of pavements, and design methodologies for structural reinforcement. In addition, a comparative analysis is made of the costs associated with implementing these solutions, with a view to gaining a more comprehensive understanding of their technical and economic viability. The result was solutions that cost slightly more than the conventional one described but, by using recycled materials, make the proposals more sustainable and potentially more suitable, such as those incorporating rubber from used tyres.
