Resumo

The Final Architecture Project titled Codifying the Landscape takes place in Porto das Salemas, on the northern coast of Porto Santo Island. Developed under the brief Designing Hospitality: Building Without Erasing, it emerges from a close reading of an extreme landscape where solid ground inevitably turns liquid. Guided by a reflection rooted in a quote by Álvaro Siza, the investigation weaves together historical accounts — such as T. Edward Bowdich’s 1823 narrative — and recent academic works on the island, proposing a shift away from the conventional image of golden beaches toward a renewed form of hospitality in the island’s north. Through site visits and a methodical analysis of the Perregil stream’s geological conditions, the project develops a sensitive, site-specific intervention: a wall that translates the monumental scale of the terrain into a more inhabitable human scale. The work relies on local materials and an “open method” of inquiry, emphasizing observation and listening as tools of architectural practice. Rather than presenting a formal solution, the project outlines a process — one that questions, interprets, and responds to the landscape. By inhabiting the site as a guest, the project recognizes and amplifies its intrinsic values, proposing an architecture that arises from the land itself with care and respect.
