Abstract
Polyurethane adhesives are materials appreciated for their properties such as: excellent adhesion, high cohesive strength, and high curing speeds. This work had as main objective the preparation of polyurethane adhesives, from sustainable polyols. Initially, a monoglyceride was produced, from vegetable oil and glycerol, using sodium hydroxide as a catalyst. The second part of the work consisted in preparing three polyols, from three compounds: pentaerythritol, dipentaerythritol and monoglyceride. Then, each compound reacted consecutively with stearic acid and dimeric acid of TOFA (Tail oil fatty acid), thus originating the final, high molecular weight polyol. The third part of the work consisted in the preparation of the adhesive, joining the polyol with isocyanate (hexamethylene diisocyanate polymer). Different adhesive formulations were developed to find the one that could originate particleboards with excellent performance. These panels were produced with wood particles and consist of three layers: one inner and two outers. Of all panels produced, only a few that presented a good apparent resistance were selected for swelling tests. It was also evaluated the average thickness of each particleboard, density, and their uniformity. This study allowed us, to conclude that the polyols obtained from pentaerythritol and dipentaerythritol, have a high potential to produce polyurethane adhesives, for applications in particleboards. .
