Manuel Duarte Pinheiro is an Environmental Engineer (1985) with a PhD in Environmental Engineering with the theme of Sustainable Construction and Management (2008). He is a full professor in the civil, architecture, and environment department of Tecnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa. He lectures in Environmental Management Systems, Environmental Impacts, ecodesign, and Sustainable Construction.

He is responsible for developing and applying the LiderA System. LiderA is the acronym for Leadership for the Environment in Sustainable Built Environment; it's the name of a design support, assessment, and voluntary certification system for the sustainable built environment (www.lidera.info). Advised and certified (through the LiderA system) the search for sustainability in more than three hundred plans, projects and undertakings, from the initial phase, to design, construction, rehabilitation and operation. Have taught more than 50 post-graduation courses and have been involved in more than 500 studies and projects on environmental impact, environmental management, strategic environmental assessment, sustainable built environment, and environmental and sustainability challenges in engineering.
