In 1996, he received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Universiteé Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris-VI). His M.Sc. (1992) and Bs.E.E. (1988) are both from Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical University of Lisbon). He is a researcher at INESC ID since 1986, where he leads the Distributed Systems Group (www.gsd.inesc-id.pt), addressing distributed systems and operating systems with emphasis on mobility, pervasive and ubiquitous systems, distributed midlleware and large-scale distributed data sharing. He has been general Chair of ACM European Conference on Computer Systems 2007 (http://www.gsd.inesc-id.pt/conference/EuroSys2007/) and ACM/IFIP/USENIX 12th International Middleware Conference (http://2011.middleware-conference.org/), both top level international conferences. He is author or co-author of more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific communications, 1 book on operating systems (edited both in Portugal and Brasil), 1 book in distributed context-aware systems (edited by Springer) and 1 book on Smart Solar Grid (published by LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing). He has served on the program committees of several international journals, conferences and workshops in the area of distributed systems.
