I had my PhD in 1990, supervised by Dr. Emílio Fernandes Tavares Ribeiro. The research of my thesis was performed at the former Instituto de Física e Matemática, or Complexo I do INIC, starting as an undergraduate in 1979. The formal defense was at IST. Presently I am an Assicoate Professor at the Physics Department of IST. I was elected in 2025 for the School Council (Concelho de Escola), the board of directors of Instituto Superior Tecnico, a faculty of the University of Lisboa. My main scientific interests are in of Quantum ChromoDynamics, besides as a minor topic I apply physics to surf technology. In hadronic physics most of my works are devoted to: - chiral symmetry breaking: the vacuum and replicas; hadron spectra as quark boundstates and resonances, microscopic hadron interactions, - exotica: tetraquarks, pentaquarks, hybrids and glueballs, - confinement: superconductivity, the pomeron, string theory, the phases of QCD. - lattice QCD: static potentials, flux tubes, both with pure gauge and with dynamical fermions. In applied physics to surf technology my main efforts are in, - saving waves endangered by see walls or jetties; - artificial reefs for surfing.
