José António Beltran Gerald was born in Lisbon, Portugal in December 1956. He graduated in Electrical and Computer Engineering by Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 1980. He joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of IST in 1980. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from IST, in 1992. He is currently Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of IST. He has been teaching several courses for graduation and post-graduation and supervised several M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses. He worked at the National Direction of the Telecommunications and later at IST. He started his scientific research at Centro de Electrónica Aplicada (CEAUTL), Technical University of Lisbon, where he worked in digital signal processing, modems, and adaptive systems. Since 1988 he has been a research engineer at Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores: Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa (INESC-ID), where he has worked in spread-spectrum, OFDM, UWB systems for wireless and PLC and signal processing for modems. He has been responsible and participated in several research projects. He has been reviewer in international scientific conferences and journals. He published more than 40 scientific papers. His current research interests are in the area of adaptive systems and energy harvesting.
